Time for a quick poll. Which is your preference?

  1. Web site (W in caps)
  2. web site (w in lower)
  3. website (w in lower and one word)

I prefer “website” to the others. I use the same compound convention when talking about “microsites” as well.

My vote goes to “website”. A web site is some forgotten corner where spiders do their thing.

Here’s another vote for “website.” I don’t like to capitalize web because, well, the web already has too high an opinion of itself. Why encourage it? ;-)

“website”. At the gut level it just feels right (and I’ve been creating websites since the WWW began).

The Web is the World Wide Web. It’s a proper noun so you should use capital W.
So a site on the Web is a Web site.
